Hephaestus Education Studio (HES) is a maker education company providing curriculum, professional development and workshops. HES specializes in integrating core subjects with maker/STEAM projects, creating an experiential learning environment in which students gain better retention of knowledge. Maker projects include design, building, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering and programming.

HES’s maker workshops integrate Common Core State Standards, 21st Century Skills, and Next Generation Science Standards into the maker projects creating a dynamic learning environment for students, and a big help to their teachers. HES is also working to incorporate real makers from local, regional, national, and international locations to be the inspiration of our maker projects, so be sure to keep checking us out on new developments on Twitter.

But what is with the strange name, Hephaestus? As a child, I loved Greek mythology, when I became an aunt, my niblings loved Greek mythology, then I became a teacher and my students loved Greek mythology. Therefore, as I teach making in many different capacities, and I specialize in integrating multiple subjects, I chose a literary/mythological Greek god to represent what HES is about. Hephaestus is a lesser known god, and is the god of many categories that can be summed up as a maker, mostly to do with metal. Fun fact, in some stories he is also the god who makes Zeus’ lightning bolts, is the one who opens Zeus’ head to free Athena, and is Aphrodite’s husband.
