Why Maker Education?

Are your students struggling to retain what they learned in class? Are you interested in an alternative to textbooks, worksheets, and chalkboards? We all want the best for students, but many of us don’t know where or how to instill change. Hephaestus Education Studio (HES) believes that students and teachers can become less dependant on static forms of learning and instead have more agency and retention through making.

Maker education is not new, just a forgotten alternative to textbooks and standardized tests due to the increasing demands on our administrators and educators in the field. Maria Montessori began a new pedagogy based on her observations of children and opened the first Montessori school in 1906 that encouraged doing as a way of learning. If students learned why the standards we teach are necessary by applying it to something productive, they are more inclined to be less begrudging to do it and more likely to retain what they learned.
