SSU’s Maker Education Certification Program Volunteer Reflection: Chabot Space & Science Center’s 8 Stations of Project Create

Chabot Space and Science center is tucked in Joaquin Miller Park’s landscape and is a small yet enticing science museum. Just as other museums and libraries have been doing the past few years, they have created their own makerspace called “Project Create”, part through the generosity of Chevron Corporation. It is divided up into 8 different conceptual stations for self-guided exploration, and a space to hold workshops for further exploring.

Marble Machines – Here, kids may create their own gravity powered contraption to get the marble to roll from above to below in a variety of ways.

Stop Motion Station – There are three stations here to create your own stop-motion video. Two is using the green screen, and one uses a dry erase board and markers.

Shaping Shadows – Students play with the shadows of blue, green, and red lights and try to find out why their shadows create yellow, cyan, and magenta.

Tech Take Apart – Every want to find out how your computer works? Here you can reverse engineer a tech component to learn how it works.

Circuit Blocks – Learn how to create lights to light-up and buzzers to buzz by controlling the current. Bonus, these blocks have magnets around the screws, making the connections easier than using alligator clips on their own.

Pixel Station – Create your own digital images by using colored translucent cylindars pegged into a light board, like a large Lite-brite.

Tinker Tailor – Explore how different fabrics drape differently and how to tailor to give a bespoke look.

Kapla Plank Blocks – A great place to chill and build. Kapla blocks are a great way to create building challenges that can be complex, while the material is so simple.

Workshop – A space for further learning, currently on display is a group weaving activity.
